The 2009 Contemporary – Contemporáneo artists-in-residency program was an extraordinary event for the Museum. FAM invited local artist, Robert Amador, and Oaxacan artist, Alfonso Barrera Muñiz, to participate in this year's residency.
These artists quickly became part of the FAM family, as staff and artists interacted with each other on a daily basis for a month. Robert and Alfonso worked day and night up until the opening night of their exhibition. Steve Ruppel, Preparator, also worked into the night hanging this exhibition, making sure this show looked nothing less than amazing. Their work was extraordinary and deeply personal, reveling in the psyche of these artists' minds and their relationship to their media. We will miss our Contemporary – Contemporáneo artists and their inspiring, kind spirits.
The reception and silent auction took place on October 3, 2009. Thank you to our sponsors.
Contemporary-Contemporáneo Artists-in-Residency Program
The Fresno Art Museum in partnership with the Mexican Consulate of Fresno has teamed up to launch Contemporary – Contemporáneo, an interaction of Mexican and American artists. The project is the first of its kind where a local museum teams up with a Mexican Consulate to address contemporary issues and build cultural bridges through a bi-national artist- in-residence program.
An artist from Oaxaca, Mexico who demonstrate a promising career is selected and paired with one counterpart from the Central Valley to participate in the program. For four weeks, the two artists interact and exchange artistic ideas while developing a better understanding of each others country. Through art, they convey their thoughts and relationship to the world that surrounds them. At the end of the residence, exhibit representing the work created during the residence is displayed. Through this exhibit, visitors are drawn into the artistic mind and transcend into their interpretations on how art can be used to unite people and countries.
The Contemporary-Contemporáneo Artist Residency includes the following:
